Get involved. Trail Volunteers are Vital!

The majority of work done on the FMHT is done by volunteers -  From the Board of Directors, the Officers, the trail mowers and the Maintenance Committee who do larger repairs, the FMHT only survives and operates through the time and effort given by many volunteers.  If you use this wonderful Trail, please give back some time through volunteering!

Work Days

Work Days are an important part of maintaining our trail.  Tasks could include painting, cutting brush, trash removal, trimming trees, etc.  Wear work clothes and bring gloves, bug spray, sun screen, water, any equipment you think might be helpful, and a friend!  All are welcome!

Work Days in 2026 are yet to be determined!

Spotlight Awards 2026

Nellie Lou Simmons

Volunteer Spotlight Award

 by Dianne Wilson, May 2026

A retired teacher from Ithaca High School, Nellie Lou Simmons joined Friends of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail in the late 90’s.

How did she have the time to volunteer?  She quilted, knitted, and was an accomplished seamstress—making beautiful items for our silent auctions for years.  She always served her church in so many ways too.

Nellie was a “top of the line” biker!  She biked several times in Europe with family and friends—one being Karen Stearns.  She biked and hiked in many states too.  Nellie rode the Dalmac for many years, and she rode the Michigander with friends, Mary Humm and Karen Stearns.

Nellie always showed up for Trail work.  She helped to put up winter barriers in rain, sleet, and snow.  Nellie served as FFMHT secretary for several years and was part of the group who acquired the Trail property in Gratiot County. She even helped to maintain an Adopt-a-Trail section in Gratiot County, Bliss to Osborne.

Nellie has done her time as a “loyal member”.  She has been a “top of the line” volunteer.  We give her back a simple gift, but with a very big Thank You!

Mary Humm

Volunteer Spotlight Award

by Jane Hemenway, May 2026

Mary Humm volunteered for the Friends of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail for 13 years as a member of the Board of Directors with elected positions of treasurer and chairperson.  She spent countless hours on Trail projects, issues, and work details.  Mary rarely missed an opportunity to get involved, do her part, and to work with the group to make a difference.

As an avid cyclist in both California and Michigan, Mary rode thousands of miles for pleasure and participated in many multi-day cycling fundraising events for AIDS support services and Multiple Sclerosis.  With her friend, Nellie Simmons, she also hiked many miles throughout the United States.

Currently, Mary devotes her time and talents to other passions.  She is the current treasurer for the Gratiot County Historical Society.  She also spends countless hours helping out at a non-profit animal welfare organization.  And, when she finds the time, she enjoys reading a good book.

Mary has made a difference in many projects and issues concerning the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail. She has helped to keep it safe and beautiful for our community.  We are deeply thankful for her dedication and determination.

Terry’s Cycle

Business Spotlight Award

by Karen Stearns, May 2026

Founded in 1989 by Terry Clements, Terry’s Cycle has been a firm supporter of bikes and bicycling in the Gratiot County area for 37 years.

Terry’s Cycle began in the old Western Auto Building on Superior Street in Alma.  When this building became too small, the busy bike shop moved to their present location on State Street.

From the very beginning, this bike business has supported the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail through advertising, hands-on Trail maintenance (especially tree cutting) and prizes for various activities sponsored by the Trail.

It’s current owner, Chris Maltby, and his wife, Sabine, continue this generous tradition. It is with great pleasure that the Friends of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail offers recognition to this outstanding Gratiot County business.
